Collaboration between Discover and SINTEF Petroleum

Discover Petroleum has initiated a new scientific development project in collaboration with SINTEF Petroleum, Trondheim. The objective is to increase the understanding of electromagnetic properties of shales, which play an important role in the interpretation of EM surveys which Discover has acquired using Petromarker technology.

Shales are one of the most widespread sedimentary rocks but its properties have not been thoroughly studied. Furthermore, it is not possible to apply the physical models developed for sandstones directly to shales because of their significantly different mineralogy, geometry and diagenesis. The recent interest in shales stems from the realization of their importance in understanding both seismic data (the seismic waves go mostly through shales before reaching reservoirs) and EM data (inversion and interpretation)

The project will go on until the summer 2009, with a possible extension. It involves senior geophysicists from both Discover and SINTEF. The work combines both theory development and field data studies.
