Discover Petroleum at the Norwegian Science Week

Discover Petroleum made its presence during the Norwegian Science Week (Forskningsdagene) in Tromsø. At our booth, we explained how a modern exploration company locates oil, and we offered a hands-on experiment where the audience could see that oil is an electrical insulator, while salt water is an electrical conductor.

The Norwegian Science Week (Forskningsdagene) is a nationwide event held every year to make science and research available to the public. The event is meant to highlight the connections between research, innovation and industrial activity, and to fuel the curiosity, interest and understanding of research for a general audience. Forskningsdagene is sponsored and organized by the Research Council of Norway.

At Discover Petroleum's booth, the audience could find information about modern oil and gas exploration, and how research, development and innovation plays an important role in our strategy. Seismic explorations were explained, the audience could examine chunks of typical reservoir rock material, and we had a fun hands-on activity to demonstrate that the electrical conduction properties of oil and salt water are vastly different. In the hands-on experiment the audience could use a voltmeter to verify that while salt water is an excellent conductor, oil is a very poor conductor. We think everyone who carried out the hands-on experiment realized that electrical measurements could give us valuable information about the content of a reservoir.

In total, almost 5000 visitors came by, and we regard our participation as a great success. The direct contact with an interested and eager audience, the enhanced visibility, and the possibility to promote recruitment of young people to a career in the oil business are all very positive effects of our presence.
